‘Garden Shed Folly’

Having studied in Edinburgh and New York, Henderson has exhibited extensively in the USA and in Britain. A major theme in her work is in the questioning of the artist’s role in satisfying the audience’s need for spectacle. Her original training in interior design is apparent in her concerns with architectural spaces and their cultural meanings. Of the Picturesque, she writes, “A complex relationship of constructed expectations and learned behaviours was produced between the viewer and the object of viewing pleasure”. Her work for Picture This , the ‘Garden Shed folly’, set out to subvert these expectations. A prefabricated gardener’s shed revealed two sides glazed with different coloured glass panes while the two other sides remain unchanged. Inside the shed, the coloured panes of glass filter and frame the landscape while the viewers find themselves on display.
